Professor Sizhao Qin Elected Fellow of AIChE

Professor Sizhao Qin has been elected as a fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), the world’s leading organization for chemical engineering professionals.

Recently, Sizhao Qin, Professor of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, was selected as a fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the field of chemical engineering. Professor Qin is also a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the International Federation of Automatic Control. As a veritable interdisciplinary leader, he has trained more than 30 doctoral students so far. In addition to providing “professional service” and achieving “major professional achievement”, AIChE fellows are required to have practiced chemical engineering for more than 25 years.


"This fellow is different from others as it requires a long enough experience with a contribution to both profession and service. As my undergraduate and master's degree are not chemical-related, it is really my great honor and pleasure to receive this distinction from AIChE." Said Professor Qin.


AIChE, founded in 1908, is the world's leading organization for chemical engineering professionals. The institute is located in New York, USA, and is designed to develop the theory and practice of chemical engineering. The association is dedicated to promoting academic research related to international chemical engineering and promoting excellence in chemical engineering education.


The election to AIChE Fellow began in 1971. Nominated by their peers, AIChE Fellows are elite members in the chemical industry and academic fields. AIChE Journal is one of the international mainstream journals in the field of chemical engineering with global academic influence.



Professor Qin is now a professor at the School of Science and Engineering of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen and a professor at the University of Southern California. Prior to this, Professor Qin was the Vice President of CUHK-Shenzhen and the Vice Dean of the Viterbi School of Engineering at University of Southern California. He is a recipient of the National Science Foundation CAREER Award, the 2011 Northrop Grumman Best Teaching award at Viterbi School of Engineering, the DuPont Young Professor Award, Halliburton/Brown & Root Young Faculty Excellence Award, Natural Science Foundation-China Outstanding Young Investigator Award, Chang Jiang Professor of Tsinghua University awarded by the Ministry of Education of China, and an IFAC Best Paper Prize for the model predictive control survey paper published in Control Engineering Practice.


Professor Qin's research interests include machine learning, industrial intelligence, data analysis, process control, monitoring and fault diagnosis, smart building energy system optimization, model predictive control, system identification, semiconductor manufacturing control, and control performance evaluation. He is currently an Associate Editor for Journal of Process Control and Journal of Chemometrics. He served as an Editor for Control Engineering Practice and an Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Control Systems Technology and IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics. Owning 13 US invention patents, he has published over 300 papers in international journals and conferences, with over 10,900 ISI Web of Science (WoS) citations and WoS h-index of 50. According to statistics from Google Scholars, the papers published by Prof. Qin have been cited for more than 30,000 times.
