CUHK-Shenzhen and CMU Join to Train Robotics Undergraduates
In the summer of 2019, five outstanding undergraduates from CUHK-Shenzhen were selected to attend the 11-week Robotics Institute Summer Scholars (RISS) programme. The joint review was co-conducted by Shenzhen Institute of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics for Society (AIRS) at CUHK-Shenzhen and the Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon University. The programme is open to undergraduates worldwide every year with only about 35 people recruited. CUHK-Shenzhen has contributed to one-seventh of the programme's global admission.

The RISS programme begins in early June and ends in mid-August. During the project, CMU's Robotics Institute will conduct various activities such as workshops, seminars, research exhibitions and training lectures to provide better information exchanges and research platforms for students interested in robot intelligent research. Not only can students gain world-class research experience, but they can also connect with global scholars in cutting-edge robotics research fields. Sophomores and juniors who are studying at the School of Science and Engineering, CUHK-Shenzhen, showcase great enthusiasm and research potential for robotics and artificial intelligence, and have certain research experience in this field, can apply for this programme.

In order to give full scope to the industrial advantages of Shenzhen and integrate the University's research with the technology industry, CUHK-Shenzhen has introduced a university-enterprise cooperation model. Together with UBTECH, the University aims to create better platforms for students to put knowledge into practice. Before attending the summer programme at CMU, admitted students will have an opportunity to conduct a one-month paid research internship at UBTECH. During the internship, students will select a research topic, participate in research and complete a research report under the guidance of a UBTECH mentor. Established in 2012, UBTECH is a world-leading high-tech innovative enterprise integrating R & D, manufacturing and sales in artificial intelligence and humanoid robots.
LV Yiwei, a 2015 graduate form SSE and Shaw College, CUHK-Shenzhen, was one of the students of 2018 RISS programme. In May, 2019, Lv was admitted to CMU 's ECE PhD Program with a full scholarship.
