Lecture Introduction:

Lingnan painting in the 20th century was characterised by its distinct time and modernity, closely tied to the historical context of China's social revolution. The works of GAO Jianfu, GAO Qifeng, CHEN Shuren, HUANG Shaoqiang, FANG Rending, GUAN Shanyue, and LI Xiongcai, among others, spanned the entire history of 20th-century Chinese painting: from tradition to modernity, and from painting language and form to real life. Lingnan painting, far from being a merely regional painting style, pioneered artistic trends for a significant period, driving the ideological transformation of 20th-century Chinese painting. The lecture will begin with the art of JU Chao and JU Lian in the early 20th century, focusing on the contributions of GAO Jianfu, GAO Qifeng, CHEN Shuren, HUANG Shaoqiang, and FANG Rending in the reform of Chinese painting, as well as the innovative practices of GUAN Shanyue and LI Xiongcai in the creation of new Chinese painting in Post-1949 China. It will provide an overview of the relationship between Lingnan painting and the developmental history of Chinese painting in the 20th century.
