The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen (CUHK-Shenzhen) was founded in accordance with the Regulations of the People’s Republic of China on Chinese-foreign Cooperation in Running Schools upon approval by the Ministry of Education. It strives to explore a new path of higher education featured by strong connections to both China and the world. The University is committed to providing top-quality higher education that features an integration of the East and the West and fostering an enriching research environment. It is CUHK-Shenzhen’s mission to cultivate innovative talents with a global perspective, Chinese cultural traditions and social responsibilities. After 10 years of development, the university's disciplinary construction has gradually improved, and it currently consists of seven schools: School of Management & Economics, School of Science & Engineering, School of Humanities & Social Science, School of Medicine, School of Data Science, School of Music, School of Public Policy, as well as a Graduate School. As of now, CUHK-Shenzhen has launched 28 undergraduate majors and 46 postgraduate (master's and doctoral) programs, more than 10,000 outstanding students from around the world are studying at CUHK-Shenzhen.
The university recruits globally and has established a faculty team with international standards. As of now, it has introduced over 600 internationally renowned scholars and researchers from around the world, including 5 Nobel Prize winners, over 40 academicians from various countries, and over 100 national-level talents. At present, 100% of the introduced teachers have teaching or research experience in world-class universities, and professors have been selected as "Stanford University World’s Top 2% Scientists" over 300 person-times, with a high selection rate of up to 30%.
Guided by innovation-driven principles and oriented towards serving the nation and promoting innovation and development in the Greater Bay Area, the university focuses on fields such as Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, Data Science and Big Data, Biomedicine, Material Energy, Economics and Finance, Public Policy, Humanities, and Arts. It actively establishes an international scientific and technological innovation platform, assembling 85 research and innovation platforms at all levels including national engineering laboratories, key laboratories in Guangdong Province, and the Shenzhen Nobel Prize Research Institute. With over 1200 research projects undertaken and 11 innovative teams recognized at the provincial and municipal levels, the university has produced a series of high-quality research outcomes, including papers published in prestigious journals like Nature and Science.
The university has always focused on the strategic needs of the country and the Greater Bay Area, following a development approach of “highlighting key points, integrating intersections, and collaborating for innovation”. Leveraging a team of world-class scientists, it is actively building emerging interdisciplinary clusters. Five disciplines including Engineering, Computer Science, Materials Science, Chemistry, Biology and Biochemistry have entered the top 1% of ESI subjects. Four disciplines such as Computer Science and Technology, Materials Science and Engineering, Applied Economics, and Biology have been included in the key disciplines for high-level universities in Guangdong Province. In 2023, three postdoctoral research mobile stations of CUHK-Shenzhen has been successfully getting approved, namely Computer Science and Technology, Materials Science and Engineering, and Applied Economics, which is also the first time that a Chinese-foreign cooperative university has been approved for postdoctoral research mobile stations. Previously, CUHK-Shenzhen has recruited more than 300 postdoctoral fellows through the provincial and municipal innovation practice base.
